Fjallraven Kanken review.
I love my Kanken, I really do. I know a lot of people who want to decide on wheteher to buy a classic or a mini sized kanken. This is my review to compare both. I hope you enjoy.
So I never really review products, I never felt the need to. But with my Fjällräven Kånken bag order came a dilema which I've since seen on many sites.
For those of you who do not know Kånken is an awsome bag from Sweden by the brand Fjällräven. My mom lived in Sweden for a while so I had quite some exposure to them as a teen. When I went to study in Helsinki (where the hype is less, but there still is...) I could not hold back and had to have my own bag. Since then I've encountered a website called 'I love my Kanken' (link), which is basically a bag cult where people from all over the world show their Kånken and what they carry in them (and while this sounds surprisingly uninteresting it's actually really cool and artistic!).
So here you are, you've found your way into the workd of Kånken and are now trying to decide which will be your first (believe me, if you own one, you want more...). If you've decided on the colour than congratulations! That for me was always the hardest task (too much to choose from!). But what to choose? A Classic or a Mini Kånken? If you're like me and sizes in inches and volume in liters do not tell you much, than this blog is for you. I will try to illustrate to you in a practical way what the difference in size is so you can make a good choice for the classic or the mini (or both, like me ...)
Classic versus Mini:
So I've started by taking a picture of both bags 'filled up'. This is when both are quite full but still not extremely expanded. As you can see both fit quite the amount of stuff (also the mini!).
I had a hard time filling up the classic cause so much stuff fits in!
So on the bottom you will find the stuff I have put in. For the classic this holds a binder with my work, a big book on the Kalevala, my 'Wreck this Journal' completely filled, my pencase, my gameboy advance, my lego lunch box and the starbucks coffee cup.
The Mini: a Blu Ray, pocket book, notebook, planner, phone, wallet, bottle of water, and my shopping bag.
I guess you could fit more in both but this is what would fit 'comfortably' (without having to overstuff your bag).
Here are both again to show you the size difference.
Note: both of them have side pockets which I dont really understand the purpose of.... in the Mini they're extremely undeep, so I can only put my sunglasses in there. In the classic one I hoped to put a bottle of water in there but I have not yet found a bottle of water so slim that it can fit in that pocket :(
I also hear a lot of people (mostly from Asia) saying they'd like to get the mini because they're not that tall etc. I think for this bag thats quite irrelevant.
If you do not stuff the classic up completely, you can press it together and it doesn't look as bulky as most other bags do...
If you want to go for the mini keep in mind that it is really mini! I use it basically as a handbag. I would not recomend the mini for people who use it for school etc. (it can't hold A-4 sized papers).
I first bought the mini but quickly felt that I wanted to bring my Fjällräven Kånken ALL the time but I couldn't. I work as a teacher at a University and my work stuff simply doesn't fit the mini (its a small binder with A-4 papers). So I started to fold all my papers so I could still bring my Kånken to work .... That was not so wise so I also ordered a classic.
Concluding: You can choose either one depending on what you have in mind doing with it. I would say that the mini is more of a handbag than an allround bag. If you want to bring it to work you will probably soon notice it not being big enough. Best way is of course to buy two but if you do not want to I hope this blog helps you decide!
If you're now sure, go on over to I love my Kanken.com (link) to buy your very own!
